While in this case the expert was hired by defense counsel rather than the insurer, if a plaintiff can demonstrate a substantial relationship between the witness and the insurer, its probative value concerning potential bias or prejudice of the witness outweighs any prejudice to the defendant resulting from the jury's knowledge that the defendant carries liability insurance.
